Identity ~ The Journey Within

One of our greatest fights in life is to be who we really are. The fight is because the
world we live in imposes the need for us to comply, which suppresses our ability to
express who we are and what we see as important – as a child we were taught to
comply because we weren’t given the scope to make choices, as teenagers
compliance meant fitting in, and as an adult we’d learned it so well that we lost the passion for living out our identity.
But why is finding our identity important? Why can’t we be happy with complying to
the expectations of others in how we should fit in?
The source for this search for our identity can be found in the deep knowing within
each of us that there is more to us and what we need to be doing in order to meet
what we were put on this earth to do.
Compliance suppresses this – we surrender to it, suppressing ourself to the point
where we don’t believe in ourself enough to speak up for ourself.
As we become more suppressed we lose what we believe to be important for us, so
we get to the point of not believing in anything enough to take control of our lives
‘Fitting in’ will not help you to be who you want to be. ’Fitting in’ is the result of a lack
of self confidence, which means that we are less committed to life than we feel we
should be – because we are not being honest and courageous to express the truth
about ourself. You will never find who you are while you are being dishonest.
How do we break free from the impositions that have been placed on us to find out
identity?
We have to be willing to not just believe in a set of values, but to ‘be’ those values.
Key to our expression of identity will be honesty and accountability. Always be
accountable for what we need to do in this life, but also for how we express ourself.
Another important value is Self belief because that will move you along the path that
is your identity.
Our expression of who we are and what is important to us should never be done with
anger, but through a feeling that you have the power to choose to be who you know
yourself to be.
As we grow, we need to become aware of when we aren’t being honest – how often
do we avoid the truth in order to keep the peace?
Start to work out is who you don’t want to be and who you’re not – which you can tell
by seeing those things that you don’t like in others. You can ask yourself the
following questions and answer them honestly:
Who am I?
What do I really want to do?
What would that mean to me?
How would that make me feel?
Who do I want to be by the time I die?
Start by being truthful to yourself, in your thoughts and take very opportunity to
connect with what you’re passionate about. By starting here, you will get to know
who you need to be in order for you live the identity you were meant to.
As you reflect, meditate and think through this, you will become aware of how many
short term constraints will constrict your decisions for being who you want to be
before you die. Anything controlling or constraining your life will reduce you, who you
are and who you want to be – financial, material, work, relationships etc.
Always remember that your dream, or passion cannot be in isolation of others; we
are all connected. So when you take action on your passion, and express what’s true
for you, ask yourself – does it fit with my dream? How does it benefit me? How will it
benefit others?
Because the level of success you have in being you, will be determined by others
wanting to be part of who you are and what you do.
Dream big.
